Correct the Internet. Highlighting biased online search, to make invisible female athletes visible.

My role:

This idea had been talked about with multiple clients, but it needed a make shit happen person. Our ECD had worked with me on a prior project, and we worked together closely on this campaign throughout its duration.

While I had to wear a creative/strategic/producer/developer/design hat at times, my four key deliverables were:

  • Led daily operations of a high-pressure campaign, managing a core team of 8 including the Executive Creative Director, Head of Design, and Head Social Strategist delivering against near-impossible deadlines and tight budgets.

  • Acted as primary liaison for clients and collaborators, handling communications with a diverse range of stakeholders from UNICEF and global sports agents to student volunteers and grassroots partners.

  • Coordinated PR efforts, overseeing global media exposure including activation at international sports events and a live demonstration of how our tool worked on national news (there’s me watching it unfold below, not worried at all clearly)

  • Managed the social pages, a primary driver of exposure for our campaign. I also worked around the clock to identify incorrect facts based on submissions through our tool, to have them designed and live on both website and social for users to see their impact reflected in near real time.

Across all sports, female athletes hold unrecognised records as the top athletes in their fields. However, search results chose to show their male counterpart instead. An unknown problem, that was causing sports bias to influence the next generation.

Results:

  • Campaign reached 200m+ people, featured by ESPN, the BBC, NBC, CBC, Fox Sports

  • Tennis legends Billie Jean King and Andy Murray wrote, “my favourite campaign” and “this needs to change”.

  • Oh, and the internet was corrected. Cristiano Ronaldo made way for Christine Sinclair,‍ ‍Sachin Tendulkar made way for Belinda Clark, Chris Wood for Amber Hearn. And Sprinkbok legend Brian Habana even corrected his own search result on Twitter.
